Who is Hicks Insurance?
We are Texans.
Charles was born in Littlefield, Texas. I was born in Hope, Arkansas, but I got here as quickly as possible. Our journey to Humble took a turn or two, but here we are.
Charles family relocated to Mancos, Colorado when he was seven or eight years old. Most of his work was toward helping out on the family ranch, but signs of things to come began to show. He began selling local papers and a national farm paper, “The Grit”. This set him on the path for a lifelong career in sales. He took some time working in the Colorado timber industry and for the Agricultural Conservation Service Grain Exchange in Farwell, Texas.
My family moved a lot. We lived in Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma and most important, Texas. After finishing school in San Antonio, I worked for American Hospital and Life Insurance Company in the group department. From there I took a short trip back to Kansas and worked with a local agency of National Life & Accident. In the meantime, my family moved to Texico, New Mexico, right across the state line from Farwell, Texas. I think you might see where this is going. You guessed it; I met up with Jesse Charles Hicks.
We were married on December 28, 1962. In March of 1963, Charles went into the United States Air Force. Following his basic training his training to become a military policeman at Lackland AFB in San Antonio began and orders sent us to Biggs AFB in El Paso. Three years later, he went to Cam Rahn Bay Viet Nam. I went to Houston, to be near family. March 1967 we had a joyful reunion in the Hobby Airport terminal. He was home! Yet he was skinny as a rail, but whole and uninjured.
We took a short hiatus into Arkansas where Charlie became the Orkin Man for a while. I mention this only because our oldest son, Larry, was born there in Pine Bluff. July of 1969 found us back in Houston. Looking around for a business that gave us control of our own destiny, insurance seemed the answer.
January 1970, Charles joined the sales force of Aetna and began to learn the insurance business. During the Aetna years, we bought our first house in the Spring Branch area of Houston and our second son, Craig, was born.
In 1972, because of changes that were occurring in the agency structure of Life Insurance, it was time to become independent. After experimenting with affiliations with property and casualty agencies, it became apparent that Hicks Insurance worked better standing alone. Although there have been changes in location and structure, our top priority remains the same, our clients.
We are involved in our community through our church, Northeast Houston Baptist, and various civic organizations. Charles has worked with Rotary and Lions and has served as president of his Lions Club. Before going full time with Hicks Insurance, I was president of our local PTA and Women of Rotary. Charles is an avid tennis player and plays at every opportunity…I own a tennis racquet.
Both Charles and I have completed the requirements of the Life Underwriting Training Council to be designated LUTCF. We support our industry by participating in the Houston Association of Health Underwriters. We meet the requirement of fifteen hours of continuing education each year in addition to attending seminars and workshops provided by insurance companies and the Life Underwriting and Health Underwriting associations.
